Two arrested for killing newly-wed woman

JAKARTA (JP): Two construction workers on Jl. Amal, East Jakarta yesterday stabbed to death a newly wed woman who refused to pay Rp 200,000 (US$85).

The Chief of Duren Sawit Police sub-precinct, Maj. Arief Darmawan, said the woman, Yulianingsih Yudokusumo, was stabbed in the head and body by two men, identified as Kardi Budi and Tata Sukarta.

"We really appreciate the help of residents in the area who participated in arresting the killers," Arief said.

One of the residents, Madjid, who heard a woman scream, thought that there was a robbery that morning.

He reported to the neighborhood chief, Yoyo, who then asked residents to go to Yulianingsih's house.

Some hundred armed residents surrounded the house and demanded that the alleged killers give up.

Then Yoyo and other residents entered the house and found Yulianingsih, 23, lying on the floor.

Budi, 21, and Tata, 30 sat down near the stabbed body.

Immediately after that, residents reported the incident to the local police and Yulianingsih's husband, Petrus.

The police seized a sword, a knife, a hammer, and Yulianingsih's hand bag, containing money and jewelry.

Petrus seemingly shocked, said that he married Yulianingsih two months ago.

He said that he hired the two unemployed men to renovate his house on Jl. Cipinang, in East Jakarta three months ago.

Petrus agreed to pay the men Rp 2.6 million for renovating his house.

During a preliminary interrogation, the two alleged killers said that Petrus only paid Rp 2.4 million. They were asking for the remaining amount of Rp 200,000.

Petrus claimed that he gave the remaining Rp 200,000 to their foreman. (jun)
