TV watchdog can't bite broadcasters

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) blamed on Thursday the lack of regulations for its inability to impose penalties on broadcasters that transgressed acceptable standards.

Speaking during a hearing with legislators on Thursday, KPI chairman Victor Menayang said another of the unresolved issues was about the authority to issue broadcasting permits, which remained a dispute between the commission and the Office of the State Minister of Communications and Information.

He also blamed private broadcasting stations that were not abiding by the broadcasting standards outlined in Law No. 32/2002 on broadcasting. --JP
