TV, radio stations distribute help

JAKARTA: The severe flooding that has ravaged the capital over the last four days has prompted TV and radio stations to air special programming to distribute assistance to victims.

Through these programs, viewers and listeners may contribute their financial and material assistance from throughout the city via the stations.

SCTV channel spokesman Budi Darmawan said that his station began distributing basic commodities and medicines worth Rp 110 million (US$10,700) on Thursday to 11 flood-prone areas.

Concerned viewers, he added, can also make contributions to the bank account of Pundi Amal SCTV through BCA Asia Jakarta 0842662000.

Indosiar has also been calling on the public to help out by sending contributions to its bank accounts at BCA number 0013040009, and Danamon number 002000010007.

RCTI, meanwhile, has launched an RCTI Peduli program, urging people to contribute financial aid through account number 1283007000 of BCA's Pasar Minggu branch.

Elshinta radio station, in addition, has received financial help through its account number 1983004494 at the BCA Daan Mogot branch.

Elshinta station manager Edi Harsono cautioned donors not to give out food that has already been cooked, however, saying the station would need several days to distribute the aid.

Edi added that listeners could feel free to leave material aid at its studio office on Jl. Joglo Raya 70, West Jakarta.

Some NGOs have also begun to provide assistance.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also lent a hand. USAID provided 39 tons of rice, wheat, soya blend and oil, while USDA provided US$10,000 for tarps, blankets, kerosene, cleaning tools and other items. -- JP

According to the lawsuit, PT Excelcomindo had violated Law No. 8/1999 on consumer protection which requires companies to provide clear and accurate information about their products or services for their consumers.

PLN won't totally shut down supply

JAKARTA: State-owned electricity company PT PLN's Business Distribution Unit, overseeing Jakarta and Tangerang, will not totally shut down its energy supply to the two areas in the wake of the massive floods in the last few days.

The unit's spokesman, Riyo Supriyanto, said on Thursday that, for reasons of public safety, PLN would only switch off its supply to inundated generators that were technically unable to operate. Some residents living in flooded neighbourhoods asked PLN to shut down the supply to prevent electrocutions. -- JP
