Turning a page on a new world

In a society where brandishing a new cell phone is what many consider one of the important things in life, twin sisters Rosi and Rian know the wealth that lies in a good book.

Last week, at the behest of the community of Kijang Island in Riau, they opened a Kartini Reading Park in the remote area.

The women, dubbed the "Twin Sister Teachers" by the media for their efforts to bring education to all, praised the efforts of the island's students to provide better resources for children hungry for literature.

They may also take a lot of the credit, for without the vision and endeavor of people like them, we may well end up as a society of SMS junkies who think CosmoGirl is a satisfying read.
