Tsunami refugees criticize NGOs

BANDA ACEH: People made homeless by the Dec. 26 tsunami in Aceh Singkil regency have criticized several non-governmental organizations for failing to make good on their promise to build the refugees new houses.

"Many NGOs have promised to help build homes for the refugees in Aceh Singkil, but none have kept their promise," local community figure Juliadin said in the Aceh provincial capital of Banda Aceh on Sunday.

Acting Aceh Singkil regent Army said his administration lacked the funds to construct houses for those made homeless by the tsunami.

Local community figure Mashudi S.R. said Rp 3.2 billion (US$320,000) allocated for an election in Aceh Singkil could be used to build houses.

However, there are rumors the local administration has already used the money to purchase official cars for legislative councillors and district heads.

"I am very disappointed that councillors lack a sense of crisis ... while others are suffering in emergency tents," Mashudi said. --Antara
