Trust must be restored

In his recent televised speech, President Habibie correctly pointed to the necessity to do something quickly about the disastrous and still worsening economic crisis. That requires immediate international support, a minimum of political stability and, most importantly, trust of foreign investors and the Indonesian people. There is only one way to forge that trust: The Indonesian government must overcome its hesitancy and take the lead in the process of democratization.
