Truck robber shot dead

JAKARTA (JP): Police shot dead an alleged truck robber and arrested six of his friends in a raid in Rawalumbu, East Bekasi on Saturday, an officer has announced.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang told the media Tuesday that the victim, identified as Imam, 27, died instantly after being chased from Rawalumbu to the East Bekasi toll road.

He was part of a 10-member gang who had done a series of robberies on trucks transporting food and other products, including electronic products, in Greater Jakarta.

"Three of the six arrested men, identified as Majun, 30, Darmaji, 24 and Anton, 28, were shot because they resisted arrest. They are being treated at Kramat Jati Hospital in East Jakarta.

"The three other (arrested) suspects: Agus, 27, Joko, 30 and Wawan, 23, are currently being detained at the Bekasi Police station," Aritonang said.

The final three members of the gang escaped after shooting an officer, Chief Sgt. Sakri, in his left knee and stomach and a passerby named Umi, 24, in the chest.

"These robbers have been on the police's most wanted list since last year. This year alone, they have committed four truck robberies," Aritonang said. (edt)
