Trisakti marks 35th anniversary

JAKARTA (JP): Trisakti University marked its 35th anniversary here with an oration by Prof. K.G.P.H. Haryomataram in front of the university's senate on Wednesday.

The oration, titled "Upholding Human Rights in a Comprehensive and Consistent Way in a Bid to Strengthen the Nation's Unity", stressed the importance of exercising political and civil rights that were neglected during past regimes.

"The proper exercise of civil and political rights will, at the end, help tone down calls for separation from mutinous provinces," Haryomataram said in his written address.

It is clearly stated in the Declaration on Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States that the right of self-determination is not valid to ethnics or tribes within a sovereign country, he said.

The anniversary celebration -- which started on Oct. 22 and will conclude on Nov. 29 -- features various social and scientific events from bazaars and exhibitions to seminars.

A special tribute and visit to the graves of four Trisakti students, killed in the May 12, 1998 shooting incident was also held. The four students were Elang Mulya Lesmana, Heri Hartanto, Hafidin Royan and Hendriawan Sie.

Earlier, head of the investigation team into the shooting incident, Adi Andojo Soetjipto, recommended that former Police chief Gen. (ret) Dibyo Widodo be summoned by the special committee of the House of Representatives to clarify police involvement in the shooting. (edt)
