Trials imminent for Depok councillors

JAKARTA: The case files of 14 Depok councillor members have been completed and submitted to the prosecution, city police spcial crimes unit chief Sr. Comr. Edmon Ilyas said on Wednesday, adding that the trials are expected to start soon.

Fourteen of 45 Depok councillors have been declared suspects for allegedly misusing Rp 9 billion (US$990,000) from the Depok budget for personal expenses such as house installments, buying cars, paying telephone and water bills and insurance premiums.

"The prosecutors have told us that they will announce the completion of the case files before the end of the month," said Edmon.

He said that the case was one of priority cases in the first 100 days of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. -- JP
