Trial of governor-elect begins

BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: The Lampung governor-elect, Alzier Dianis Thabrani, is scheduled to go on trial at the Bandarlampung District Court on Wednesday on charges of forging a school diploma.

Alzier has also been charged with involvement in corruption. Lampung Prosecutor's Office spokesman Fietra Sani said on Tuesday that Alzier would face a separate trial on the corruption charge.

He said his office had completed Alzier's dossiers and would soon submit them to the court.

The charges of graft and diploma forgery were laid against Alzier after he was elected Lampung governor in December 2002. His swearing in has been postponed, pending the outcome of his trials.

He defeated the then incumbent governor Oemarsono, who was backed by President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno said the central government was considering a revote for Lampung governor. --Antara
