Treat your acne right away

Dear Dr. Donya,

After reading your article in The Jakarta Post, I would like to ask you if it is possible for an adult to use isotretnoin.

I've had acne for almost a year, particularly infections on my chin. I've tried everything but the problem keeps returning. Can you please give me some advice? Thank you.

Dear Tom,

It is possible for adults to use isotretnoin, but it should be used under the supervision of a dermatologist because of several possible side effects.

A few of the common side effects are dry lips, irritation of the eyes, swelling of the eyelids and lips. There are other severe but rare side effects such as hepatitis, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Treatment for acne requires attention to the inflammatory process as soon as possible because early treatment can prevent scarring. A dermatologist (skin specialist), can help you and should be consulted before you start using isotretinoin.

I recommend that you don't interfere with the lesions and once you have pimples, treat immediately. Do not allow them to stay on your face for a long time as it will destroy the skin. Apply a lotion such as benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin.

I cannot recommend a dermatologist for you, but am sure that if you cannot find one in Bali, there will be one in Jakarta who can help you. Good luck.
