Treason suspect on hunger strike

JAYAPURA, Papua: Treason suspect Felip Karma has been on a hunger strike at the Jayapura Police Station since Dec. 3.

Felip is accused of leading a rally on Dec. 1 to commemorate the declaration of Papuan independence.

The suspect also has refused to answer questions from police investigators. He communicates with his lawyers through signs or by writing his responses.

A doctor monitoring Felip's health, Samuel Maripadang, said on Tuesday the suspect was in danger of dehydration and digestive problems if he continued the hunger strike. The doctor did not recommend, however, that Felip be admitted to the hospital.

Felip said in a written statement that he went on strike to protest the use of violence by officers during his arrest. He said the police handcuffed him and beat him during his arrest.

Police arrested Felip and Yusak Pakage on Dec. 1 after they allegedly raised the Morning Star separatist flag and led people in observing the declaration of Papuan independence. -- JP
