Traveler's tips

Bengkulu, the capital of the province of the same name, is only a 55 minute-flight from Jakarta. Sriwijaya Air and Merpati Airlines fly there, with one-way fares of Rp 200,000 and Rp 250,000 respectively.

That is around the same fare for the bus trip, which takes approximately 18 hours.

Accommodation is plentiful, clean and moderately priced, with the best to be found on the beach outside of town.

Walking is the easiest way to get around the small town. Watch out for the heat, though, and carry sun block and wear a hat as it can be pretty unbearable during the dry season.

Public minivans, becak (pedicab) and ojek (motorcycle taxi) are available in town. Taxis, however, are only for charter and quite expensive, at Rp 35,000 per hour for a minimum order of two hours. Rent a car instead.

It is advisable to bring your own meals if you go out of the capital and cannot stand hot and spicy West Sumatran food, which is seemingly the only fare available.

The best time to see the exotic Rafflesia Arnoldy flower in bloom is July and August.

If you have more time, visit Enggano Island, some 114 kilometers off the coast. Despite a swampy coastline, irregular boat schedule and nine-hour trip, it is said to be worth it as the island is home to numerous coral reefs, a sparkling sea and lovely beaches. -- Hera Diani
