Travel tips

How to get there

Air Zimbabwe flies to Harare from Singapore every Wednesday and Sunday. From Harare, daily flights are available to Victoria Falls. Public buses, trains or rented cars are other options to reach the falls from Harare. Daily flights are also available from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Victoria Falls.

When to go

Year round, though visibility during March's peak water flows can be a problem, and the rains usually begin in November.

Where to stay

Accommodation of all grades, from pure luxury to backpacker lodges and campsites, is plentiful. We stayed at the Elephant Hills Resort (www.zimsun.co) that was outstanding at about US$278 a night. The Victoria Falls Hotel (built 1904) is also highly recommended.

Entertainment

There are several bars, nightclubs and casinos to enjoy after sunset. Presently, however, most of them are empty.

Currency

According the Zimbabwean government rules, foreigners must pay their accommodation charges in foreign currency. Though all major credit cards are accepted at hotels, shops and restaurants, it is not advisable to use them in Zimbabwe given the hyper inflation, unstable Zimbabwean dollar and the unrealistic exchange rates applied by the credit card companies.

Health

As a precaution, take malaria prophylactics before entering the Vic Falls area.
