Transportation council members announced

Bambang Nurbianto, The Jakarta Post/Jakarta

The newly formed City Transportation Council announced on Wednesday its 13 members, who were selected through a series of recruitment tests.

The new councillors -- comprising academicians, experts, business players and non-governmental organizations of the transport sector, as well as public transportation workers and users -- will team up with an official from the city transportation agency and a Jakarta Police official.

Recruitment committee member Darmaningtyas said the recruitment tests conducted by the University of Indonesia was fair and the administration did not intervene in the process.

He said the council would be divided into five commissions overseeing fare and finance, education and public relations, roadworthiness and facilities, research and development and regulations.

The establishment of the council is mandated under Bylaw No. 12/2003 on transportation, which was endorsed on Nov. 13, 2003, and required the administration to set up the council six months after its enactment.

However, the bylaw does not detail the council's authority nor tasks, which are to be determined in a gubernatorial decree.

A number of experts are pessimistic that the council will not play a significant role in resolving transportation problems, as it could only issue recommendations to the governor.
