Translation errors
I deeply regret some errors in the translation of my letter to the editor which appeared on this newspaper on June 22, 1996.
First, I heard about the plan to strip Goethe-Institute Bandung of its cultural role, leaving it merely as a German language institute. There was no mention of its complete closure like the institutes in Surabaya and Medan.
Second, Gruenewald is a painter, not a writer, and I learn a lot from his paintings and writings on him. Besides, in the sentence "It would have been difficult for me ... etc.", what I mean is that I am not talking about my difficulty in visualizing myself, but in visualizing my own work (drawing).
Last, the word "With" in the sentence "With German technology etc...," I would suggest that the word "While" be used instead or "At the moment when..." as a translation for ketika, so as not to give the impression that Goethe, Schubert and other German artists and scholars are fading into the background because of the country's technology and industrial products.
