Train smashes into car, injuring three

CIREBON, West Java: An Argo Bromo executive-class train smashed into a pickup truck on Thursday morning in Cirebon, injuring three people in the car.

The three people injured in the crash are being treated at Ciremai hospital.

According to Rohudin, a railway attendant at the Jl. Pangeran Drajat intersection where the accident occurred at about 4 a.m., the pickup truck drove around the crossing gate and attempted to outrace the train.

"The pickup sped up even though we had turned on the sirens warning of an approaching train," Rohudin said.

The executive-class train traveling between Jakarta and Surabaya dragged the pickup for about 20 meters.

Suhartono, the local public relations head for railway company PT KAI, said the accident did not disrupt any other trains. -- JP
