Traffic operation starts next week
A massive joint operation of the checking of motorists' documents and equipment will be conducted nationwide beginning next Monday.
The amount of fines and places of operation will be decided by the provincial authorities, i.e. the police, high court and district attorney, said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. K. Ratta on Saturday.
Operation Zebra, thus it is codenamed, is designed to help create discipline among motorists.
A similar operation has been conducted since earlier this month in a bid to be well prepared for the upcoming APEC forum, which is scheduled to be held in November in Bogor, south of here.
The Jakarta authorities have agreed to double the fine scale which apparently sparked sit-in strikes by city bus drivers.
According to Ratta, the operation beginning on Sept. 26 will involve local police, military officers and officials from the traffic and land transportation agency (LLAJR). (bsr)
