TPJ looks into Rp 5,000 billing error

JAKARTA: British tap water company Thames PAM Jaya (TPJ) has
admitted the possibility of human error in a billing dispute that
prompted a customer to file a police report against the company
on Monday.

TPJ spokesman Rhamses Simanjuntak said the company was
investigating the matter and that the process could take time,
considering that the billing dispute occurred in January 2000.

Harun Al Rashyid, a professor of administrative law at the
University of Indonesia, filed an official complaint over the
alleged "misappropriation" of Rp 5,000 (about 56 US cents).

Harun's lawyer, JJ Amstrong Sembiring, said that in January
2000 the company fined Harun Rp 5,000 for late payment of his
November 1999 water bill.

The lawyer said Harun paid the fine but later found that he
had paid the bill on time. Harun then sent a letter to the
company asking that he be refunded the Rp 5,000, but never
received a response.

"We will need time to complete the investigation, including
tracking the complaint records that we have," Rhamses said. --JP

Panarub workers rally for JPK

TANGERANG: Some 300 workers of PT Panarub, a company that
produces Adidas shoes in Pasar Baru, Tangerang municipality,
staged a rally at the factory compound on Friday to demand health
allowances (JPK).

The rally degenerated into a clash with dozens of security
personnel and management staff when the latter tried to block the
workers' way into the factory.

No one was injured during the clash because several police
officers managed to calm the angry workers.

As the rally started at 1 p.m, the workers, from the Shoe
Factory Workers Association (Perbupas) stood in rows for two
hours at the factory gate. While carrying dozens of posters and
banners, they sang labor movement songs and made speeches to
express their demands.

"We have repeatedly delivered our demands in a written
statement to the management and have even asked the municipal
manpower agency to force the management to accede to them, but to
no avail," Ngadinah, Perbupas secretary told The Jakarta Post.

The management promised to award the JPK to workers last
December, but they had demanded it in July last year, she said,
adding that the workers had long been awaiting the JPK
allowance.--JP

losses attributable to the landslide totaled about Rp 75 million
(approx. US$8,670), and the incident had been reported to Bogor
