Tourism fair highlights E. Java
SURABAYA: The tourism fair currently being held in East Java's
capital of Surabaya, attracted 51 tour operators, including 35
international operators, the organizer said.
The 35 international tour operators participating in the
Majapahat Trade Fair came from the United States (4), the
Netherlands (3), Taiwan (16), the Philippines (1), Middle East
(10) and Russia, the province's head of tourism division Harun
said on Thursday.
The fair, which was opened on Thursday and will last through
Sept. 8.
Entitled "East Java as an Overland Destination", the fair
mostly offer tourism packages in East Java. -- JP

Toyota hikes car prices in Vietnam
HANOI: Japanese auto giant Toyota has raised the prices of
some of its cars assembled in Vietnam by as much as 4.4 percent
as a result of the government's tax hikes on imported car parts
kits, officials said on Friday.
The new prices came into effect on Monday this week to
compensate for the government's decision to raise import duties
on completely knocked down (CKD) component kits for vehicles,
said a company's spokeswoman.
The highest raise was recorded for the Land Cruiser, up 4.4
percent to 59,000 for each vehicle.
Under the finance ministry's Decision 110, import duties on
CKD component kits for vehicles with 15 seats or less increase to
25 percent from the previous 20 percent.
The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association, which is
made up of 11 foreign-invested companies including Toyota,
DaimlerChrysler and Ford, has answered the tax increases will
devastate the industry. -AFP

FedEx to turn Guangzhou as a hub
HONG KONG: U.S.-based Federal Express said Friday it has signed a
letter of intent with the Guangzhou Airport Authority allowing
the company access to information to enable it to assess the
suitability of the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou as an
express hub for Asia.
The company however said the letter of intent was a non-
binding agreement, adding it had no immediate plans to relocate
its Asia-Pacific hub from Subic Bay in the Philippines.
Fedex said it has a lease agreement with Subic until August
2007, with an option to renew the contract.
"As part of our normal long-term planning process, we are
exploring a number of opportunities to further grow our business
in Asia. We are in the very early stages of evaluating possible
expansion locations and no decision has been made," the company
said in a statement.
Apart from Guangzhou Airport, the company is looking at
Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in the Philippines as an
alternative site for its future express hub in Asia.
A newspaper report Friday said the company planned to transfer
its express hub from Subic Bay, where it was said to have
encountered operational problems due to its expanding
