Tornado damages homes in Bantul

BANTUL, Yogyakarta: A tornado struck Srigading subdistrict in Bantul regency on Tuesday evening, leaving at least 15 homes in ruins and dozens of others damaged. The tornado also brought down many trees and power lines in the subdistrict, leading to a power blackout that lasted until Wednesday afternoon.

Diyono, 42, an eyewitness, said that the wind quickly rose to storm force. "Trees near our house were uprooted, and part of the roof of our house was blown off. Then, suddenly, the electricity went out," said Diyono, adding that the tornado lasted about 30 minutes. -- JP
