Top policeman's cars tested for emission

JAKARTA: In an attempt to set an example to the public, Jakarta Police Headquarters arranged on Saturday to test the emission of some vehicles in its compound.

"This program is initiated by the Appreciation of Clean Emission (AEB) organization, to which the city police belongs. We have agreed to be part of the environmental movement by acting locally, within our own compounds," city police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara said.

The headquarters is among 24 institutions that are members of the AEB. Other members include the Office of the State Minister of the Environment, the University of Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia and Wisma Antara, and industries, such as Kimia Farma, PT Martina Berto and Komatsu.

The cars of top police officers were among the first to be tested.

Makbul's official car, a Toyota Camry, passed the test. His car's emission comprised only 0.08 percent carbon oxide (CO), far below the benchmark of 2.5 percent for cars produced after 1996 that use fuel-injection system. -- JP
