Top court keeps rector killer in jail

BANDA ACEH, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam: The Supreme Court has
upheld a 17-year jail term given to the man convicted of
murdering Syah Kuala University rector Dayan Dawood.

An official with the Banda Aceh District Court said on Monday
that the jail sentence for Mahyudin alias Raja Preman had been
upheld by the Supreme Court on Sept. 22.

The district court found Mahyudin, a native of Aceh Besar,
guilty of the murder and of illegal possession of firearms. The
Aceh High Court had upheld the verdict.

In its decision, the Supreme Court said that the crime, which
took place in 2001, had inflicted a severe loss on the family of
the victim and deprived the country of an education expert. --
