TNI personnel arrested in Papua

JAYAPURA: Capt. Kaspar, the deputy commander of the Army's subdetachment in Sorong, was named a suspect in an illegal logging investigation in Papua, according to a military official.

"He has been named a suspect and was arrested two days ago. I issued his arrest warrant," said the detachment commander, Col. Herry Pramono, on Thursday.

Kaspar was arrested and charged with the possession of about 2,000 cubic meters of illegal logs in Teminabuan, Sorong.

The head of the Trikora Military Command, Maj. Gen. Nurdin Zainal, said military personnel involved in illegal logging would be processed and punished according to the law.

"He (Kaspar) was punished in a similar case in 2001. If he has been named a suspect again, it could mean he has repeated his previous crime," Nurdin said. -- JP

Thousand of fish die in Jambi lake

JAMBI: Thousands of fish in fish farms on Lake Sipin in Bulurankenali subdistrict, Telanaipura district, Jambi city, have died over the last several days.

"The fish died because the temperature of the lake rose," said the head of the provincial fisheries and marine office, Herman Suherman, on Thursday.

Heavy rain over the last several days brought to the surface of the lake organic substances -- the remains of fish food and dirt. The organic substances contained sulfates, which raised the water temperature, thus reducing the oxygen in the water.

Herman said the only way to stop the fish from dying was to dredge the lake to remove the organic substances.

This incident has been a heavy blow to the fish farmers, who depend on the fish as their sole source of income. -- JP

Former regent reported to KPK

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Former Pasir regent Yusriansyah Syarkawi, who ended his term of office in January, was reported to the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) over Rp 130 billion (US$14.4 million) in reforestation funds.

The report was filed by a local monitoring committee and the Islamic Student Association on Wednesday. The report accuses the former regent of allowing logging companies to cut down trees without making them contribute to a reforestation fund.

"By violating regulations and not collecting the reforestation funds, he cost the country up to Rp 130 billion," said Fitriansyah, a coordinator of the monitoring committee. -- JP
