Tips to prevent malpractice

JAKARTA (JP): How can you lessen your chances of suffering from medical malpractice? Dr. Azrul Azwar, chairman of the Indonesian Medical Association, gives some tips:

Establishing a good doctor-patient relationship is essential. See the same doctor all the time. It's good to have a family doctor who is familiar with your condition and characteristics. This helps minimize the possibility of something going wrong.

Use your right as a patient to ask about everything related to the medical action. Before signing the informed consent paper, the patient should understand the risks related to whatever action will be taken.

Don't hesitate to refuse if you have doubts about the medical action.

Ask for a second opinion. (swa)
