Tips for smart shopping

JAKARTA (JP): Here are some tips for smart shopping from the Indonesian Consumers Protection Foundation (YLKI) and Ramayana department store:

* Whenever possible, compare prices from different department stores, malls or supermarkets for the same product.

* Be selective on the things that are sold on discount and investigate the reason for the price cut. Be careful with the producers' or retailers' offers for bonus points or any proposition that will stimulate the customers' emotion.

* Check expiry dates of edible products and over-the-counter medicines, as well as the producers' warning on how to consume them.

* Use all senses to check the color, smell and taste of the products and check for defective packaging. Some products are sold cheaper because of such defects.

* Talk to the sales assistant about the product, warranty, product replacement and where to have it repaired.

* Try electronic goods or clothing before purchasing.

* Each product must bear one bar code.

* If you have complaints, talk to sales assistants or duty managers -- many companies hang their pictures in their stores. The latter is more sensible in handling complaints.

* Don't buy services or goods if you are unsure of their quality.

* Keep receipts and product brochures or manuals. They can be used as proof of the product's expected performance, price and the producers' claims.

* Use a shopping list.

* Be sure to know what to buy before you go shopping.

* Check the labels, sizes and prices of the items. Buy the things you really need, at the price you can afford.

* Only take items with you that ensure shopping convenience. Take just enough money for the things you want to buy. Don't take too much cash, your infants or too many bags that require your attention more than shopping.

* Provide adequate time for shopping. Don't do it in a hurry. (lup/Tri Hafiningsih)
