Tip on printing the total number of pages in your document

JAKARTA (JP): Last week we took a look at how we could print the total number of pages in a document so that, when we zapped it out, our recipient would know at a glance how many pages we were faxing.

Today, I'll share with you the steps you have to take to achieve the same results in both Ami Pro 3.01 and WordPerfect for Windows 6.0. The accompanying illustration shows you what to do. Let's tackle Ami Pro first.

In Ami Pro, creating a header or a footer couldn't be easier. Just put the mouse cursor on top of the text area if you're creating a header, or underneath it if you're creating a footer, and then click the mouse button. All you have to do now is insert the text for the running header or footer.

Like in Winword, pressing the TAB key once will center the text, and twice will right-align it. You can even mix them, if you wish. You can have three parts of the same header or footer, each with its own alignment.

To start the string of text, type in the word "Page", followed by a space. Then click on Page, and then Page Numbering. Select the style of page number you'd like to have -- whether Arabic, Roman or whatever, then click on OK. Type in a space and the word "of", followed with another space. To complete everything, click on Edit on the menu bar, click on Insert, and then Doc Info Field. When the dialog box appears, select Number of Pages.

In WordPerfect, it will be a snap. A macro is already shipped with the program that will do everything for you. You don't even have to create the header or footer. Just click on Tools, and then Macros. A dialog box will appear, and select the macro named PAGEXOFY.WCM from the list. Click OK, and in the dialog box that appears you can select the position of this text -- whether left- aligned, centered, or alternately left and right. Click on OK, and it's done.
