Tigers have enough to eat
BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Sumatran tigers in the Way Kambas national park have enough prey to survive, a forestry official said Saturday.
"A recent survey found that wild animals are abundant in the national park," Eko Wardoyo, head of the Lampung provincial forestry office was quoted by Antara as saying.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) recently called for immediate action to save the rare Sumatran tiger from extinction.
The Bali tiger disappeared in the 1940s and the Java tiger vanished in the 1980s, WWF reported.
It is estimated there are 500 Sumatran tigers and their numbers are declining because of a shrinking habitat and poaching.
Residents living around the Way Kambas national park have reported encounters with tigers and elephants several times near their villages. (06)
