Tiger kills farmer and wife

PADANG, West Sumatra: A farmer and his wife were killed by a tiger while they were working on their farm in Sungai Gambir village Sunday, a press report said yesterday.

Local people said they believe the tiger came from the nearby Kerinci Seblat National Park, which is increasingly under threat from illegal logging.

The national park covers four provinces, Jambi, Bengkulu, Riau and West Sumatra.

Chief of the Langgayang police precinct Second Lieutenant Kliwon Setiadi said the authorities had been notified of the incident.

He said tiger attacked the woman before turning against her husband who had tried in vain to help her, Antara reported.

Local residents have voiced their concerns about the possibility of similar attacks occurring if illegal logging in the national park continues. (pan)
