Three torpedoes found in Ambon

AMBON, Maluku: An Amahusu resident found three torpedoes on Wednesday that are believed to be a legacy from World War II. The discovery of the torpedoes in the densely populated subdistrict of Amahusu in Ambon city caused unease among local residents.

Police personnel were quickly deployed to the area to dig up the torpedoes. They quickly disinterred them and brought them back to police headquarters for destruction. Two of the torpedoes were 1.5 meters long and 40 centimeters in diameter, while the other was 80 centimeters long and 25 centimeters in diameter.

The torpedoes were discovered by Tony Siloy, 44, as he was cleaning a pigpen near his house. After ascertaining that the objects he had found were in fact torpedoes, he reported his discovery to the police. A number of similar discoveries of leftover World War II munitions have been made in Ambon city over the years. -- JP
