Three thieves killed

JAKARTA (JP): Three alleged thieves were killed, two of them by police, in three separate incidents, a city police spokesman said on Sunday.

City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bahrul Alam said 34-year-old Asep was beaten to death by angry residents of Buaran subdistrict in Pulogebang, East Jakarta who caught him redhanded stealing a Kijang van bearing registration number B 1352 HU at midnight on Saturday.

Earlier on Saturday East Jakarta police shot dead Endang, 22, one of a four-member group of cellular phone suspect robbers, in Kramat Jati market after he resisted arrest. The remaining three members of the gang fled.

Anton said a Central Jakarta Police plainclothes officer gunned down 19-year-old Holoan Manurung near Senen railway station for ignoring an order to surrender. Holoan was chased for snatching a gold necklace from a woman's neck.

In a related development, East Jakarta police detectives shot a suspected heroin dealer, identified as Untung Suyanto, 36, on his leg, when he was trying to escape police arrest.

East Jakarta police chief of detectives Adj. Comr. Agus Irianto told reporters that Untung was shot outside his house on Jl. Taruna in Pulogadung, East Jakarta, on Saturday afternoon. (ylt)
