Three players go to third round

JAKARTA (JP): Three of four young chess players secured their places in third round of the Enerpac Master Tournament at the Utut Adianto Chess School in Bekasi.

National Master (MN) Taufik Halay, 13, defeated MN Hendra Johan 1.5-0.5 in Saturday's match. MN Susanto Megaranto, also 13, defeated MN Yacobus Sampouw, the 1972 national champion, with the same score. Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) Master (MP) Tirta Chandra earned a dramatic victory by defeating MN Asrul Aray 1.5-0.5 in a playoff.

Percasi spokesman Kristianus Liem said in a fax the fourth young player, Andrean Susilodinata, 10, was beaten 2-0 in a playoff.

"Andrean, however, is still playing in the consolation group," said Kristianus. "In other rounds, three members of the Indonesian chess Olympic team booked victories over their opponents," he said.

MI Danny Juswanto beat MN Sutarto 2-0; GM Edhi Handoko beat MN Haryadi Sucipto 1.5-0.5; and GM Ruben Gunawan beat MN Johny Jurmansyah 1.5-0.5 in a playoff. MF Hamdani Rudin also won in a playoff.

"Seeded player GM Ardiansyah beat MN Fabian Lumentut 2-0, while the seeded MI Dede Liu defeated the only female participant, MIW Upi D. Tamin, 1.5-0.5," Kristianus said. (nvn)
