Three killed in Tanah Abang fire

JAKARTA (JP): Three women were killed and five others injured in a fire that gutted part of a four-story building on Jl. Fakhrudin in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Friday evening, a police officer said.

Tanah Abang Police substation chief, Capt. Angesta R. Yoyol, voiced concern that many more victims would be found under the debris since the fire had not yet been fully extinguished.

The officer said the building is used for the quarters of Djajanti Group's employees.

He added that his officers were searching for clues to the cause of the fire and the number of the people inside the building at the time of the fire.

"We're still investigating the case," he said.

Witnesses said the fire broke out at 6:30 p.m. At least 10 fire engines were deployed to the scene.

All three bodies were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, and the five wounded women were admitted to nearby Tarakan Hospital for medical treatment. (06)
