Three killed in communal clash

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: At least three people have been killed and six others injured in a clash between residents of two villages in Central Lampung regency, some 100 kilometers north of here.

Local police spokesman Capt. Zainal Gunawan told Antara on Monday that order had been restored following Sunday's flare-up. He said the provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Riswahyono also visited the hostile residents to call for restraint.

Police identified two of the fatalities as Andi Wahroji, 18, and Slamet Riadi, 25. The identity of the third fatality, a man, remained unknown.

Five men are being questioned at the Central Lampung Police Precinct in connection with the clash.

Violence erupted on Sunday when a group of migrants living in Seputih Mataram village attacked Terbanggi Besar village in retaliation for two robberies targeting the migrant people.

Police plan to establish a post on the border between the two villages to anticipate future conflict. (amd)
