Three injured in student brawl

JAKARTA (JP): At least three students were injured in a Friday night brawl between University of Indonesia (UI) activists supporting the House's special committee investigating two financial scandals involving the President.

The fight broke out when a group of UI Senate Executive Boards (BEM-UI) activists prevented two students who claimed to represent the Student Action Front (FAM) from erecting a tent at the university campus in Salemba, Central Jakarta.

Yulianto and Rusli were beaten up in the one-sided brawl and were admitted to nearby Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital due to head wounds. One of BEM-UI students identified as Aprilianto suffered a minor injury.

A BEM-UI activist told The Jakarta Post the fight was predictable as tension had risen when FAM activists spread out pamphlets accusing BEM-UI of breaching the reform movement a few days ago. (ylt)
