Three die in well

PAMEKASAN, East Java: Three residents of Tampojung Tenggina, Waru district in this Madura Island died on Monday, possibly of toxic smoke inhalation after they went down to a well to repair a broken diesel engine, Antara reported yesterday.

Madura police chief Lt. Col. Suratmo Sukarnoto said here on Tuesday that the three farmers wanted to water their tobacco plants but could not draw water from the well because the diesel was broken. Dulllah, 27, went down the well to fix it, and took too long so that his two friends decided to go down too.

Police helped lift the victims from the well. (swe)
