Three crushed to death by train

JAKARTA (JP): A man, his wife and their 15-year-old daughter were crushed by an Argo Bromo express train after they disembarked from their train on the wrong side of the tracks at the Pondok Kopi station in East Jakarta on Wednesday night.

The couple's 13-year-old and 11-year-old sons, who also were present, survived the accident but one of them suffered serious injuries.

Suminto, a staff member at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta, identified the three victims killed in the accident as 40-year-old Cakra, his wife Darikem, 35, and their daughter Taryani.

"Their son Sukiman, 13, lost both of his arms and is currently under heavy sedation here, while his younger brother Iwan suffered no injuries at all," Suminto said.

A eyewitness, Sgt. Maj. M. Nurdin, said on Thursday the family was seen getting off the train from Purwakarta, West Java, at around 10:30 p.m.

"Iwan told me that they had just come from Subang, West Java. When the family got off the train on the wrong side, Darikem was helping Iwan up onto a coupling on our train when the Argo Bromo train passed and hit the rest of the family," Nurdin said.

Cakra, his wife and their daughter suffered severe injuries and died instantly.

Before being sedated, Sukiman asked in a barely audible voice the fate of his parents.

Iwan was picked up at the hospital by a relative who did not wish to be identified. Before his relative arrived, the boy said his father used to earn about Rp 200,000 a month.

"I don't know what will happen to me now," he said.

A staff member at the hospital said if anyone wished to adopt Iwan they should contact the hospital. (ylt)
