Three books dedicated to Munir

The 16-day campaign to end violence against women was marked with the launching of three books published by the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) and dedicated to the deceased human rights activist Munir.

The first book, Menggelar Tikar Perdamaian (Rolling out the Mat of Peace), which was published in cooperation with the Asia Foundation, is about East Timor's Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The 69-page book explains that Indonesia, with its planned Commission on Truth and Reconciliation could learn from East Timor about how to establish and manage the commission.

The second book, Perjalanan Perempuan Indonesia Menghadapi Kekerasan 2004 (The Journey of Indonesian Women in Facing Violence 2004), is about a consultation meeting between Indonesian women organizations with the United Nations special rapporteur on violence against women, Yakin Erturk.

The 126-page book, which was also supported by the Asia Foundation, looked into violence against women in Indonesia as reported to Erturk in the meeting on July 29, this year.

The third book is Kekerasan terhadap Perempuan Yang Dilakukan dan/atau Dibiarkan oleh Negara Selama Berlangsungnya Konflik Bersenjata (1997-2000) (Violence Against Women which was Conducted or/and Omitted by the State during Armed Conflicts).

The 111-page book, which was published in cooperation with the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID), is about violence against women which has happened in armed conflict in several countries, including Indonesia, Afghanistan, East Timor, India and Japan. --JP
