Three arrested with detonators

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: A special team from the West Kalimantan Police arrested three men for possession of 400 detonators and 626 kilograms of ammonium nitrate in Pondok Harapan Kita housing complex in Pontianak over the weekend.

The men, identified as Abu Hari, 37, M. Zein, 47, and H. Khairani, 43, were apprehended separately on Saturday and Sunday after police received reports from residents who were alerted by the delivery of a large amount of fertilizer to a local house.

Three hours later on Saturday, police raided the house and found detonators and chemical liquid instead of fertilizer.

An occupant of the house, Yati, said Abu, her relative, was staying at Hotel Pirang Merah. Police picked him up at the hotel, and on Sunday netted the other two men.

M. Zein said the men were planning to use the explosives in dynamite fishing.

Ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer sometimes used in explosives. (22/edt)
