Thousands to be resettled

PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: About 44,000 East Javanese families will be resettled in the one-million-hectare peat moss project being developed here for agricultural use, an official was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday.

The head of the Ministry of Transmigration's provincial office, Sucipto, visited East Javanese already resettled in Kalampangan subdistrict yesterday and said the exodus from the densely populated province would take place gradually.

"The project is meant to improve the East Javanese's welfare," he said, adding that East Java's 33 million people are struggling to find land to till.

The official also took the migrants 10,000 yellow T-shirts, six television sets, and sports equipment. (swe)
