Things to do in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, Thailand (JP): * Night Bazaar: Crowded? Yes. Noisy? Yes. But even for the traveler inured to the "local color" of such markets, it's worth a trip. If you have the patience to sift the jewels from the junk in this open-air maelstrom, there are some great bargains on local handicrafts and clothing. Check out the hill tribe section of the market.

Hungry and adventurous? Look for the arch that says "Anusanna Bazra". Inside, you'll find a selection of food stalls like "Fatty Seafood No. 1", which will certainly become, as the sign says, "Your Flavarite". Chang Khlan Road.

* Chiang Mai Doll Making Center: A small workshop hidden on a country lane on the southern outskirts of the city which produces handmade ceramic dolls reflecting the colorful heritage of the hill tribes. Call owner Youthana Boonprakong for directions. Phone/fax (053) 248433.

* Chiang Dao Hill Resort: Mountain chalets on the road north to the Golden Triangle. Relaxing spot for lunch. Highway 107 at kilometer 100.

* San Kamphaeng Road: Largest selection of handicraft factories in the area. Exquisite silks, cotton, lacquer ware, ceramics and silver jewelry. Bor Sang Village is famous for Thai paper umbrellas. Highway 1006 east of Chiang Mai.

* Doi Suthrep: Locals say that if you haven't visited this elaborate hilltop wat which overlooks the city, you haven't really visited Chiang Mai (we missed it). Highway 1004 west of the city.

* Chiang Dao Elephant Training Center: Elephant training sessions in morning, followed by two-hour "trek" to hill tribe village, or shorter jungle ride. Also offers river rafting trips. One of several centers in the area. Telephone (053) 215489.
