Thief shot dead on crime scene

JAKARTA (JP): Patrolling police officers stopped a theft that was in progress at the traffic lights on Jl. Kamal Raya in West Jakarta and shot dead one of the two thieves, a police report said on Sunday.

Twenty-four-year-old Widodo, who lives in Warung Pojok, Kapuk Raya, West Jakarta, died instantly at the scene on Saturday night, while his accomplice, Mamay, 32, was arrested.

The report said the police officers witnessed the pair pointing a knife at an unidentified pedestrian while ordering him to hand over his wallet at approximately 7:15 p.m.

According to the report, Widodo resisted arrest and challenged the officers to a fight. Widodo ignored warning shots ordering him to drop the knife, and was fatally shot.

Police confiscated Rp 70,000 and a knife from the two men.(emf)
