Thief shot dead in Bekasi

JAKARTA (JP): A 28-year-old man was shot dead Tuesday night after stealing a motorcycle at a housing complex in Bekasi, an officer said.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said the victim, Hermansyah, entered the residence of A. Cholihin in Jatibening estate at 4 p.m. and took the motorcycle parked in the yard.

He said police, who searched for the suspected thief soon after receiving a robbery report, found Hermansyah on Jl. Jati Karya at 7 p.m.

"We shot him because he was trying to attack the officers," said Aritonang.

Forensic expert Zulhasmar Syamsu at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta performed a postmortem examination on the body and found gunshot wounds to Hermansyah's head and left leg.

"There were also bruises and cuts on his head, torso, arms and legs," he said.

He said Hermansyah's wrists were red, an indication that the alleged thief may have been handcuffed. (09/cst)
