The stars to watch: 3. The play makers

By Richard Pedler

JAKARTA (JP): The playmaker has been at the heart of the greatest teams for years. Charlton, Rivelino, Maradona and Matthaus have led by example, providing the passes, the goals, and the on-the-field leadership that has taken their teams to the top.

Endurance is a feature of these top-of-the-range models who can inspire their colleagues to new heights. Their individual performances are also the barometers by which to judge the team's chances of success.

Erwin Sanchez, Bolivia (19 Oct. 1969)

The "New Platini" has a fierce shot, great acceleration and intuitive awareness, and he will be out to impress.

Enzo Scifo, Belgium (19 Feb. 1966)

A three time World Cupper, whose ball control and thunderous shots have powered the Red Devils forward for 10 years.

Roberto Baggio, Italy (18 Feb. 1967)

Current World Player of the Year. He is "able to do whatever he wants with the ball at his feet" (Papin). Does exactly what he wants on the field... simply the best!

Freddy Rincon, Colombia (14 Aug. 1966)

With a lanky build but with a deft touch and fast acceleration, his excellent finishing helped demolish Argentina last year. At Italia'90, he put the ball through German keeper Illgner's legs to score the equalizing goal.

Rai, Brazil (15 May 1965)

Socrates brother has been pilloried in the World's press, but coach Parreira knows that Rai is the key to Brazil's hopes of recapturing their World Title at last. Elegant but introverted.

Thomas Hassler, Germany (20 May 1966)

A runner and playmaker combined in one small powerhouse with pace, vision and deadly free-kicks, he has taken on Matthaus' mantle with ease.
