The stars to watch: 2. The wing-back

By Richard Pedler

JAKARTA (JP): The first pair of attacking backs were the most successful ever seen. The Santos Brothers, Djalmar and Nilton were an essential part of the 1958 and 1962 Brazilian Champions. Pushing up to fill the wide midfield positions, their devastating wing play opened up opposition defenses, providing chance after chance for Pele, Garrincha, Vava, and Didi.

All wing-backs combine a forward role as wide midfielder with defensive solidity. Pace is essential, as well as dribbling skill and tough tackling. They are allrounders who can change the course of a game.

A key feature in the success of the modern (West) German team has been a regular supply of world-class wing-backs: Paul Breitner in 1974, Peter Briegel, and Andreas Brehme in 1990. First capped in 1984, Brehme's valuable experience has led to a recall for the veteran despite the outstanding progress of 22- year-old Christian Ziege.

USA'94: The Wing-Backs

Italy: Paulo Maldini (26 June 1968)

Indisputably the best wing-back in the world, Maldini has already won over 50 caps. Two-footed, fast and almost impossible to pass, he will link up on the left wing with Giuseppe Signori.

Brazil: Cafu (7 June 1970)

Equally at home as right back (for Brazil) or midfielder (for Sao Paulo), a man to watch.

U.S.: John Harkes (8 March 1967)

If coach Milutinovic persists with Lalas as right-back, Harkes may be stuck in midfield, not getting the chance to show his undoubted class out wide.

Bolivia: Luis Cristaldo (31 Aug. 1969)

A graduate of the Tahuichi Youth Academy, the nominal left back is Bolivia's secret weapon with his aggressive surges down the flank and powerful long-range shooting.

Russia: Andrei Kanchelskis (23 Jan. 1969)

With his devastating pace, in full stride no-one can catch him. Fresh from a triumphant season with Manchester United. Superb crosser, plays deeper at national level.

Russia: Viktor Onopko (14 Oct. 1969)

With his distinctive appearance, the 24-year-old Russian footballer of the year marked Ruud Gullit out of the game in his first full appearance at left-back. Now operates further forward.
