The ocean shipping business

From Sinar Pagi

In the past there were three big shipping companies, Gesuri Lloyd, Samudera Indonesia and Trikora Lloyd, owned by Adil A. Nurimba, Sudarpo and Budiardjo. In the early 1980s Adil Nurimba, alias Liem Eng Hay, was able to buy a number of container transports of more than 10,000 deadweight tons.

Now their names have as good as disappeared from the world of shipping in Indonesia. This is particularly true in the case of Adil Nurimba who was once known as the king of shipping in Indonesia. He no longer owns any ships. His two children, who lack the ability to make the best of the prevailing situation and conditions, are in charge of looking after foreign ships sailing into Indonesia. At 73, it isn't easy for Adil Nurimba to conduct business, especially considering his physical condition.

It is difficult for him to find business partners from Taiwan and China. This is due to his financial position which makes it impossible for him to work with foreign investors who prefer to collaborate with entrepreneurs at the height of their power.
