The mighty pen

Your articles on expatriates has helped us to put on our thinking caps. Some writers state that this country will be saving a lot of money if there are no expatriates. Others are trying to put forth their views and explain an expatriate's contribution to development, the transfer of technology and the economy, thereby explaining that an expatriate is hired only if there is a need for one. Various points of views may be ratified on this issue.

I would like to elucidate that the job of a writer is a stupendous one. The writer has to communicate information and visions, disseminate ideas, and consider various points of view in a broader and mature perspective. Isn't the readership of The Jakarta Post going to decline if there are fewer expatriates, thereby directly affecting the number of subscriptions? I think the packers and movers are the only people who are making quick money at the recent exodus of the expats.

Writers, you have to consider various issues before putting your thoughts in black and white. You have the job of indoctrinating the masses, shaping public opinion and rekindling the faith and confidence of the people, showing them the light at the end of a dark tunnel.

If a foreign national commits a crime, you should condemn the crime and not the person or nationality. This is in the spirit of brotherhood to bring everyone together, avoid disintegration at this hour, prepare them for the present and equip them for the future. You are much more than gifted practitioners able to transport us to fresh levels of experience and insights. Remember your pen is mightier than anything else.
