Terrorist bomber's timeline of death
Oct. 12, 2002: At about 23:10 p.m. local time a powerful car bomb exploded in front of the popular night spot Sari Club in the tourist resort of Kuta.
Oct. 13, 2002: National Police forensic experts found part of the car's chassis inside the bomb crater.
Oct. 15, 2002: Utilizing re-etching techniques, the forensic experts managed to ascertain the chassis serial number. It was GB 611286. It turned out later that this was a false number etched on the chassis by the terrorists.
Oct. 16, 2002: Police found the car's license plates. The car's number was DPR 15463 and belonged to a white Mitsubishi L300 minivan. The police quickly traced the ownership of the vehicle. The last owner was identified as Amrozi.
Nov. 5, 2002: 25 days after the bombing, police apprehended Amrozi at his home in Tenggulun village, Selokuro district, Lamongan regency, East Java.
Nov. 12, 2002: Amrozi was officially moved to the Bali Police Headquarters' detention facility.
Nov. 16, 2002: Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar visited Amrozi and made a grave PR gaffe. Before awaiting journalists, Da'i, smiling and laughing, was seen chatting amicably with Amrozi. Amrozi all the time displayed his signature wide grin, which earned him the nickname "the Smiling Bomber".
Apr. 30, 2003: Prosecutors submitted Amrozi's case file to the Denpasar District Court.
May 5, 2003: The trial of Amrozi commenced.
June 30, 2003: Prosecutors asked for a death penalty for Amrozi.
Aug. 7, 2003: After examining 58 witnesses during the course of 19 trial sessions, presiding judge I Made Karna Parna sentenced Amrozi to death after the 315-page verdict was read out.
