Telkom using technology from Korea

JAKARTA: State telecommunications company PT Telkom has started operating the code division multiple access (CDMA) facilities supplied by South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics, a press release said Friday.

Samsung said the equipment, called the "base station system" (BSS), which it had installed in Surabaya, began commercial operation this Monday.

The CDMA 2000 1X-system equipment, which has the capacity of serving 40,000 telephone lines, provides voice calls, Internet access, email service, short messaging service, facsimile transmission and voice mails.

The project was part of the deal signed by Samsung and Telkom under the deal worth US$200 million, aimed to modernize Indonesia's telecommunications network.

Under the deal, Samsung will supply the BSS to Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Bali with a total capacity of 800,000 telephone lines.

Aside from the BSS, Samsung will also supply Telkom with mobile switching centers (MSC) to handle 1.6 million subscribers of Telkom. -- JP
