Telkom, Lucent extend ties

JAKARTA (JP): American telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies and RisTI, the research and development arm of state telecommunications company PT Telkom, have agreed to extend a 1997 agreement to jointly develop intelligent network software in Indonesia.

Lucent said in a statement that since 1997, both companies had been cooperating in developing three projects: distance learning technologies for the education sector, an intelligent network for business and government sectors and a telecommunications management system to enhance the efficiency and quality of Telkom's network.

Both companies have agreed to extend the cooperation for another two years.

Lucent also said it had signed an agreement with Telkom to expand the state company's tele-education facilities to Medan, North Sumatra; Balikpapan, East Kalimantan; and Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Telkom currently has tele-education facilities in Bandung, West Java. (jsk)
